Preparation and typical goals
Common requests include a higher and straighter bridge, a more defined and slightly more projected tip, and narrower nostrils. Many patients also want a subtle result that still looks natural for their face rather than a dramatic Western-style change.
Preparation starts with photos and a discussion of proportions. The height of the bridge, the angle between the nose and the upper lip, and the width of the base are considered together with the forehead, eyes and chin.
Common anatomical features
Asian noses frequently have a low or flat bridge, a rounded tip with thicker skin, relatively small and soft tip cartilages, and a smaller septum. The limited amount of septal cartilage is important, because it affects how much material is available for grafts.
Raising the bridge: cartilage or implant
Bridge augmentation can be done with the patient’s own cartilage or with synthetic implants. Your own cartilage, taken from the septum, ear or, when larger amounts are needed, the rib, integrates with the body and has a low long-term risk of infection or extrusion.
Synthetic implants are widely used in some regions, but they carry a higher long-term risk of complications such as infection, displacement or visible edges, particularly under thin skin. Dr. Aydın prefers autologous cartilage whenever possible and will discuss the options openly during consultation.
Tip definition
Because the tip cartilages are often small and soft, simply trimming them rarely gives a crisp result under thicker skin. Instead, the tip is supported and shaped with cartilage grafts that improve projection and definition. The aim is a tip that looks refined but still natural in proportion to the face.
Nostril and base refinement
If the nostrils are wide or flared, alar base reduction can narrow them by removing small wedges of skin at the base. This is only done when it improves balance, since narrowing the base too much can make the nose look pinched or affect breathing.
Breathing function
Structural changes should never compromise airflow. Septal deviation, enlarged turbinates or weak internal valves can be corrected in the same operation. Harvesting septal cartilage for grafts is also planned so that enough support is left to keep the nose stable.
Recovery
The operation typically takes about three hours and may be longer when rib cartilage is used. You stay one night in hospital, rest at your hotel, and have internal splints removed within about seven days. Visible swelling usually settles within two weeks, while the bridge and tip continue to refine for up to twelve months, and longer with thick skin.
If rib cartilage is used, there will be a small incision on the chest, which is placed to be as discreet as possible and may cause some extra discomfort for a few days.

Why is rib cartilage sometimes used in Asian rhinoplasty?
Rib cartilage is used when more material is needed than the septum can provide. Asian noses often have a smaller septum, and significant bridge augmentation or tip support may require larger, stronger grafts. Rib cartilage is especially common in revision cases where septal cartilage has already been used. It requires a small incision on the chest, which is placed discreetly, and it may add some temporary discomfort and a little extra operating time.
